Theory — 6 thì QUAN TRỌNG NHẤT cho IELTS Writing

Trong IELTS Writing Task 1 + 2, bạn chỉ cần 6 thì. Học sai thì = mất điểm Grammatical Range.

Thì 1 — Present Simple: sự thật & quan điểm

Dùng trong:

  • Task 2: viết opinion, general truths ("It is widely believed that…")
  • Task 1: mô tả pie chart, static bar chart

Ví dụ:

  • “Working from home offers significant flexibility.” (sự thật chung)
  • “I firmly believe that…” (ý kiến cá nhân)
  • “Housing accounts for 40% of household spending.” (Task 1 static)

Lỗi phổ biến: chủ ngữ số ít nhưng quên "s":

  • ❌ “He think that…” → ✅ “He thinks that…”
  • ❌ “Public transport help reduce pollution.” → ✅ “…helps reduce…”

Thì 2 — Past Simple: sự kiện đã xong

Dùng trong:

  • Task 1: mô tả line/bar chart có mốc năm cụ thể trong quá khứ
  • Task 1: mô tả Map với 2 mốc quá khứ

Ví dụ:

  • “Tourist numbers rose by 20% between 2010 and 2015.”
  • “The forest was cleared in 1995.” (past passive)

Cấu trúc phủ định: S + did not + V (nguyên mẫu)

  • ❌ “He didn't agreed.” → ✅ “He didn't agree.”

Từ chỉ dấu: yesterday, in 2020, last year, between X and Y

Thì 3 — Present Perfect: kết nối quá khứ đến hiện tại

Cấu trúc: S + have/has + V3

Dùng trong:

  • Task 2 intro: nêu xu hướng bắt đầu từ trước và vẫn tiếp diễn
  • Task 1: khi đề nói "over the past X years" và bao gồm hiện tại

Ví dụ:

  • “In recent years, obesity has become a growing concern.” (bắt đầu quá khứ, vẫn đúng nay)
  • “An increasing number of professionals have opted to work from home.”
  • “The city has undergone significant transformation over the past decade.”

Lỗi phổ biến: nhầm với past simple:

  • Past simple = kết thúc: “Obesity rose sharply in the 1990s.”
  • Present perfect = vẫn tiếp: “Obesity has risen sharply in recent years.”

Từ chỉ dấu: recently, lately, in recent years, over the past decade, since 2020, so far

Thì 4 — Present Continuous: đang diễn ra / xu hướng hiện tại

Cấu trúc: S + is/am/are + V-ing

Dùng trong:

  • Task 2 intro: xu hướng đang thay đổi trong hiện tại

Ví dụ:

  • “More and more people are opting to study abroad.”
  • “Cities around the world are experiencing rising temperatures.”
  • “Technology is transforming the way we work.”

Lỗi phổ biến: dùng với stative verbs (know, believe, own, love):

  • ❌ “I am believing that…” → ✅ “I believe that…”
  • ❌ “He is knowing the answer.” → ✅ “He knows the answer.”

Thì 5 — Future Simple: dự đoán

Cấu trúc: S + will + V (nguyên mẫu)

Dùng trong:

  • Task 2 body: dự đoán hậu quả nếu không có giải pháp
  • Task 2 conclusion: gợi mở tương lai

Ví dụ:

  • “Without decisive action, climate change will accelerate irreversibly.”
  • “AI will displace millions of workers in the coming decade.”
  • “If this trend continues, the situation will worsen significantly.”

Nâng cao — thay "will" bằng modal khác:

  • “…is likely to worsen.”
  • “…may well displace millions.”
  • “…is expected to transform industries.”

Thì 6 — Passive Voice: đối tượng bị tác động

Cấu trúc: S + be + V3 (+ by agent — thường bỏ)

Dùng trong:

  • Task 1 Process: PRESENT passive ("is heated", "are cleaned")
  • Task 1 Map: PAST passive ("was demolished", "was replaced")
  • Task 2: khi muốn nhấn mạnh đối tượng, không quan trọng ai làm

Ví dụ:

  • “The raw material is heated to 200°C.” (Process — present passive)
  • “The forest was cleared in 1990.” (Map — past passive)
  • “Strict regulations should be enforced by governments.” (Task 2 — modal passive)

Cấu trúc phổ biến:

  • Present passive: is/are + V3
  • Past passive: was/were + V3
  • Present perfect passive: has/have been + V3
  • Modal passive: should/must/can be + V3

Typing — Gõ 1 đoạn dùng 5 thì đan xen

Gõ chính xác đoạn dưới — chú ý cách dùng thì linh hoạt:

In recent decades, urban populations have grown at an unprecedented
rate, and this expansion is placing enormous pressure on public
infrastructure. When cities such as Bangkok expanded rapidly in the
early 2000s, planners underestimated the demand for public transport,
and the consequences of this oversight are still felt today. If
governments do not act swiftly, congestion will worsen considerably,
and further investment in mass transit systems must be prioritised.

Phân tích thì:

  • "have grown" → Present Perfect (bắt đầu QK, vẫn tiếp)
  • "is placing" → Present Continuous (đang diễn ra)
  • "expanded / underestimated" → Past Simple (mốc "early 2000s")
  • "are felt" → Present Simple Passive (sự thật hiện tại)
  • "do not act" / "will worsen" → Present Simple + Future (điều kiện tương lai)
  • "must be prioritised" → Modal Passive

Speaking — Đọc to 10 câu, chú ý âm cuối V3 / V-ing

Mỗi câu đọc 3 lần, chú ý âm cuối:

  1. “Housing accounts for 40%.” (âm /s/)
  2. “Prices rose sharply.” (âm /z/)
  3. “He works from home.” (âm /s/)
  4. “They have opted for remote work.” (âm /d/)
  5. “The forest was cleared.” (âm /d/)
  6. “Cities are experiencing rapid growth.” (V-ing rõ /ŋ/)
  7. “Technology has transformed education.” (âm /d/)
  8. “The bridge was widened.” (âm /d/, sau /n/)
  9. “AI will displace many jobs.” (will → /wɪl/)
  10. “Regulations should be enforced.” (âm /st/ ở "should")

Chú ý:

  • Âm -ed đọc thành /d/, /t/, hoặc /ɪd/ tùy chữ trước (worked = /t/, played = /d/, wanted = /ɪd/)
  • Âm -s / -es đọc /s/, /z/, hoặc /ɪz/ tùy chữ trước

Grammar — Chọn thì đúng

1. In 2020, the population of Vietnam ______ 97 million.

  • A. reaches
  • B. reached
  • C. has reached
  • D. was reaching

B. reached — Mốc "in 2020" đã xong → Past Simple.

2. In recent years, more and more people ______ to work from home.

  • A. choose
  • B. chose
  • C. have chosen
  • D. are choosing
Đáp án

C. have chosen (hoặc D. are choosing) — "In recent years" + xu hướng đang tiếp diễn → Present Perfect hoặc Present Continuous đều đúng.

C nhấn mạnh tích lũy từ QK đến nay. D nhấn mạnh xu hướng hiện tại.

3. In the recycling process, glass bottles ______ into small fragments.

  • A. crush
  • B. crushed
  • C. are crushed
  • D. were crushed

C. are crushed — Process = Present Simple Passive.

Câu:

  • A. Trong quá trình sản xuất, bột được nghiền và trộn với đường.
  • B. Trong 10 năm qua, số lượng người dùng smartphone đã tăng gấp đôi.
  • C. Năm 2015, dân số thành phố đạt 10 triệu.
  • D. Chính phủ nên áp dụng quy định nghiêm ngặt hơn.

  • 6 thì đủ dùng cho IELTS Writing: Present Simple, Past Simple, Present Perfect, Present Continuous, Future, Passive
  • "In recent years / over the past decade" → Present Perfect
  • "In 2020 / last year" → Past Simple
  • Task 1 Process = Present Simple Passive; Task 1 Map (quá khứ) = Past Simple Passive
  • Chủ ngữ số ít → verb thêm "s" (housing accounts, he works)
  • Stative verbs (know, believe, own, love) → KHÔNG dùng continuous
