Theory — Vì sao Overview quyết định 25% điểm Task 1?

Overview = đoạn nêu xu hướng / đặc điểm nổi bật NHẤT của biểu đồ, KHÔNG có số liệu chi tiết.

Đây là đoạn quan trọng nhất của bài Task 1 vì:

  • Task 1 chấm theo 4 tiêu chí, mỗi tiêu chí 25%: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range.
  • Task Achievement đánh giá chủ yếu qua Overview.
  • KHÔNG có Overview = tối đa band 5.0 cho Task Achievement, dù body có xuất sắc mấy.

Đọc mỗi cụm 3 lần. Đây là bộ cực đắt điểm cho Overview:

Xu hướng (trend):

  1. “experienced substantial growth”
  2. “underwent significant transformation”
  3. “fluctuated considerably”
  4. “remained relatively stable”

Grammar — Overview nào PASS / FAIL?

Đọc 5 Overview dưới. Ghi PASS hay FAIL và lý do.

1. “Overall, tourism increased by 45% in France, 32% in Spain, and 28% in Italy from 2010 to 2020.”

Đáp án

FAIL — Có số liệu cụ thể (%). Số liệu để dành cho Body, KHÔNG được đặt trong Overview.

Sửa:

“Overall, tourist numbers rose substantially in all three countries over the decade, with France maintaining its position as the most visited destination throughout.”

2. “Overall, France had many tourists.”

Đáp án

FAIL — Chỉ 1 đặc điểm (thiếu đặc điểm thứ 2), câu quá cụt, dùng "many tourists" thay vì cụm nâng cao.

Sửa:

“Overall, France consistently attracted the largest number of tourists throughout the period, while all three countries experienced upward trends in visitor numbers.”

3. “Overall, expenditure on education varied significantly across the five cities, and there was a clear correlation between household income and the share spent on schooling.”

Đáp án

PASS ✅ — Đủ 2 đặc điểm (variation across cities + correlation with income), không có số liệu cụ thể, dùng cụm "varied significantly" nâng cao.

4. “In this pie chart we can see many things about spending.”

Đáp án

FAIL — Không có đặc điểm nào cụ thể ("many things" = vô nghĩa), dùng "In this pie chart we can see" (informal, non-academic).

Sửa:

“Overall, food and housing continued to account for the largest share of household spending across both years, though entertainment and technology grew markedly at the expense of clothing.”

5. “Overall, the manufacturing process comprises eight sequential stages, beginning with the extraction of raw material and concluding with the packaging of finished goods ready for distribution.”

PASS ✅ — Chuẩn Overview cho Process diagram: nêu tổng số bước (8) + điểm bắt đầu + điểm kết thúc. Lưu ý: với process, số bước tổng cộng KHÔNG bị coi là "số liệu chi tiết cấm".

Game — Chọn Overview đúng nhất cho từng đề

Cho 3 mô tả biểu đồ. Chọn Overview đúng nhất trong 3 lựa chọn A/B/C.

Đề 1

Biểu đồ đường thể hiện số lượng người dùng smartphone ở 4 quốc gia (VN, TL, SG, PH) từ 2015 đến 2025. Cả 4 nước đều tăng, VN tăng mạnh nhất (từ 30% dân số → 90%), SG cao nhất suốt kỳ (luôn > 85%).

  • A. “Overall, Vietnam experienced the sharpest rise, growing from 30% to 90% of the population, while Singapore consistently remained above 85% throughout the period.”
  • B. “Overall, smartphone adoption grew substantially across all four countries, with Vietnam registering the most dramatic increase and Singapore consistently maintaining the highest penetration rate throughout the decade.”
  • C. “In conclusion, smartphones are very popular now.”
Đáp án

B ✅ — Không có số liệu (không như A), đủ 2 đặc điểm (VN sharpest rise + SG highest), dùng ngôn ngữ nâng cao ("substantially", "consistently maintaining").

Lỗi A: có số liệu (%, "30% to 90%") → sai công thức Overview. Lỗi C: dùng "In conclusion" (sai — Task 1 không có conclusion), "very popular now" quá informal.

Đề 2

Bản đồ so sánh khu đô thị Xanh 1985 và 2025. Năm 1985 chủ yếu là ruộng và rừng, 2025 có chung cư, trung tâm thương mại, đường cao tốc.

  • A. “Overall, the Xanh urban area underwent dramatic transformation over the forty-year period, evolving from a largely agricultural landscape into a densely developed modern district.”
  • B. “Overall, in 1985 there were farms and forests, but in 2025 there are apartments and highways.”
  • C. “Overall, the north-east quadrant saw the construction of a shopping mall measuring approximately 2,500 square metres.”
Đáp án

A ✅ — Big picture: "dramatic transformation… agricultural → modern district". Dùng passive voice ("underwent") chuẩn cho Map.

Lỗi B: quá đơn giản, không dùng ngôn ngữ nâng cao ("there were… there are…"). Lỗi C: quá chi tiết (số liệu m²) → thuộc về Body, không phải Overview.

Đề 3

Sơ đồ quy trình sản xuất giấy từ gỗ. Gồm 6 bước: chặt cây → nghiền vụn → nấu bột → tẩy trắng → cán → cuộn giấy thành phẩm.

  • A. “Overall, wood is turned into paper through a machine.”
  • B. “Overall, the paper production process comprises six sequential stages, beginning with the felling of trees and culminating in the rolling of finished paper ready for use.”
  • C. “Overall, first the trees are cut down, then they are broken into small pieces and mixed with chemicals to make pulp.”
Đáp án

B ✅ — Đúng công thức Overview cho Process: tổng số bước (6) + điểm bắt đầu (felling of trees) + điểm kết thúc (rolling of finished paper). Passive voice + ngôn ngữ nâng cao.

Lỗi A: quá đơn giản ("through a machine"), không thể hiện quy trình có nhiều bước. Lỗi C: mô tả CHI TIẾT các bước → thuộc về Body, không phải Overview.

  • Overview = đoạn quyết định 25% điểm Task 1 (Task Achievement)
  • 2 câu, bắt đầu bằng "Overall,…"
  • CẤM số liệu cụ thể — dành cho Body
